common & the last poets – the corner

i’m a sentimental fucker by nature, i suppose…this is getting’ me all nostalgic for hangin’ out on streets after dark, getting’ dirty looks from old folks and police, and getting’ beat up for tennis shoes.

wait a minute…that was last weekend…

diggin’ the Beat…the music is minimal at best and the track has this sorta jibber-jabber underneath that suggests a crowded street corner…we get kanye west on the hook [and producing] plus the last poets coming in and doing their thing here and there. but it’s the words that get me.

he talks about how he “roll in an Olds with windows that don’t roll down the roads where cars get broke in and stole.” wow. a rap about how you DON’T have a million dollar ride in your gated community. and how we all got “uncles that smoke and some put blow up they nose to cope with the lows the wind is cold and it blows.” what? you mean, all those studio gangster-crack dealin’-wannabe motherfuckers have been misleading the public about those they “sell” their "drugs" to? you mean, those are real People? who knew?

and i mean, i know this motherfucker did a Coke commercial, but for what he’s doing here, i’m feelin’ forgiving for that shit.
