on the record...
deep down, i've always been a rockstar. and since that dream is becoming an increasingly unlikely reality, my life has been and will be a complete failure. but no, that's not due to any unrealized rockstar dream...no. i fucked it up WAY before that dream went down the tube.
so what better way to hone my already capable and quite witty writing chops? go ahead, guess. i'll wait. seriously. ok got it? don't show me. alright, is this it? no? well, what is it? huh? what? well, if that's what YOU think i'm going to do, you are WRONG. i am NOT doing that again, i don't care WHO thinks it's a good idea. no way...no...when i need something to write about, i will turn to music. or drugs, who knows? but for now...submitted for your approval, record reviews from a certified genius in the field of audio [insert smart word here later]. i have no rhyme or reason as of yet what i will pick or how i will pick it [probably with my finger]. but you can rest assured, these are all recordings i have paid for. seriously. i'm not kidding.
ok...let's get on with it.
sufjan stevens - greetings from michigan...
not a big fan of this one, although i'd heard plenty of praise about it. much of what i read mentioned american folk, and concept album, and electronics, and acoustic guitar, and glockenspiel.
right up my fucking alley.
so as it plays, it's really irritating the piss out of me. and perhaps you're thinking good...in light of the things i mentioned above, you may very well be thinking i got what i deserved: an ear full of crap. one song had a banjo and horns. a banjo and horns for chrissakes!
it seems to be a concept album about michigan, and from the song titles i guess it is. rather inoffensive and polite. how can that be? detroit is the motor city, the murder city capital of the world...unless you live in darfur. yeah, go get an atlas and a newspaper, you moron. i mean michigan is home to a lot of rock...sweaty teddy, the mc5, and motown, motown, motown. and that white rapper...what's his name? no no, the other one. yeah, that one.
perhaps repeated listenings would reveal depth and character, emotion, genius even. or it could brainwash you into thinking it's good. i don't get this record, although i wanted to. don't misunderstand, i love quiet music, and that has been the majority of the tunes i've been into as of late. but this is just so, i don't know, neutered? cerebral? groove-less? white-bread? as i said before, it came highly recommended and its about to leave smashed to pieces because i don't have the TIME for this. i need "ROCK AND ROLL, a lot of SOUL, GIVIN' IT UP, givin' the people a GOOD TIME. HIT IT AND QUIT IT, the burnin' flame is runnin' out of time." Damm...that's a HEADPHONE MASTERPIECE right there. but not here with sufjan...and what the f--- kinda name is that anyway?
i'm going to get my motorhead albums.
